The Way Back History of Printing (Part 2)

From the very first printing press, to a few different versions of it, the entire process of printing has experienced its fair share of change over time. Sprinkle in a little lithography with a dash of rotary and color printing and you’ll soon make your way to the modern age of printing.

Screen-printing – 1907
Some credit old-fashioned stenciling for the invention of screen-printing but technically, a patent in 1907 gives Samuel Simon of England, ownership. This print process is most popular for clothing and similar mediums.

Photocopy – 1960’s
Though there were other ways to make copies, Xerox introduced xerographic office photocopying in the 1960’s and it seemed that anything you wanted could be duplicated in an instant (most commonly:  smashed faces and handprints).

 Laser ~1980’s
By the time the first individually used laser printer made its way into homes it was 1981 and the price tag was a hefty $17,000. Over time, the production of other, similar units heightened, driving the cost down. This shift set the tone for more people producing professional level printed materials from home.

 3D Printing
Around 2010 the term 3D printing made its debut. Also referred to as additive manufacturing, the process creates printable 3D models via computer-aided design. Toys, prosthetics and countless other amazing products are now being made with this technology.

Sure, there are plenty of nooks and crannies throughout time that we could dig into to discover more about printing processes of the past, but this two part instillation was only meant to give you an overview of the way back history of printing.
